Rocklahoma turns 20 in Pryor

Rocklahoma marks twenty years over Labor Day weekend, with Godsmack, Papa Roach and Slayer closing the three nights. Saturday, September 5 splits Tulsa between Gladys Knight and Los Tigres del Norte. The Drillers play their last home games of the season.

The one thing

Rocklahoma turns twenty this year, and the whole thing runs Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 6 at Pryor Creek, about an hour up the turnpike. Godsmack closes Friday, Papa Roach closes Saturday, and Slayer closes Sunday playing Reign in Blood for its fortieth anniversary. More than forty bands fill the three days. Friday brings Stone Temple Pilots, Hollywood Undead, Buckcherry, Yelawolf and Jet. Saturday brings Cypress Hill, Dropkick Murphys, Pennywise, Black Veil Brides, Wolfmother and Living Colour. Sunday brings Black Label Society, The Pretty Reckless, Insane Clown Posse and Suicidal Tendencies. If you are camping, the Thursday Night Throwdown kickoff party opens things up on September 3. Twenty years is a long run for any festival, and this is the deepest lineup Pryor has put together in a while.

Live music and comedy

Saturday, September 5 is the night that splits the town. Two legends, a punk show and a blues set all start within an hour of each other, and none of them are in the same room.

Festivals and free stuff

  • First Friday Art Crawl fills the Tulsa Arts District on Friday, September 4 from 6 to 9 pm. Galleries and studios stay open late, shops keep their lights on, and there is live music on the street. Walking around costs nothing.
  • The Tulsa Farmers' Market is at 1 South Lewis on Saturday, September 5 from 7 to 11 am. Early September is when the last of the melons and the late tomatoes overlap, so it is a good week to go hungry.
  • One thing that is not happening. Tulsa's Great Raft Race floated the Arkansas River for the last time in 2025, after the organizers decided the job of reconnecting the city to its river was finished. If you had Labor Day pencilled in for it, it is not on the calendar this year. They have said they want to build new river events, so there should be something to watch for.

Sports

The Tulsa Drillers finish at home. They host the Wichita Wind Surge for six games at ONEOK Field from Tuesday, September 1 through Sunday, September 6, and these are the last home games of the regular season. First pitch is 7 pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Wednesday, September 2 starts at 12:05 pm, the final afternoon game of the year. Friday, September 4 has fireworks after the game. Saturday, September 5 is Harry Potter night, with house caps for the first 1,500 fans through the gate. Sunday, September 6 is fan appreciation night at 6 pm, with fireworks to close the season out. Tulsa is chasing a franchise record of 79 wins, so the last week actually matters. FC Tulsa is on the road at San Antonio on Saturday, September 5. Their next match at ONEOK Field is Wednesday, September 30 against New Mexico United.

On the horizon

Next week does not let up. Archers play The Vanguard on Wednesday, September 9. Thursday, September 10 stacks up fast, with Gene Simmons Band at The Cove, Fox N Vead at The Vanguard, and both Steven Ho and Sean Patton opening club runs at Bricktown Comedy Club. Friday, September 11 is the big one, with Ray Wylie Hubbard at Cain's Ballroom, Trombone Shorty at the McKnight Center in Stillwater, Zacarias Ferreira at Imperio Event Center, and Diamond Rio at Cherokee Casino. Further out, the Bluegrass and Chili Festival takes over downtown Tahlequah on September 11 and 12, and the Tulsa Greek Festival runs September 17, 18 and 19. Full rundown next Monday.
