Cain's Ballroom is the most famous room in Oklahoma and one of the great American music halls. It opened as a dance academy in 1930, and by the mid 1930s Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys were broadcasting from its stage, which earned it the nicknames the House That Bob Built and the Carnegie Hall of Western Swing. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003, and it still runs as a working concert hall, not a museum.
The heart of the place is the original maple dance floor, sprung and laid in a concentric square pattern so it gives a little under a crowd. Oversized portraits of country and western swing legends look down from the walls. Most shows are general admission and standing, so the floor fills in around that famous spring, and the room stays intimate even when it is packed.
The history is not all fiddles and dance floors. In January 1978 the Sex Pistols played Cain's on one of only seven stops of their only American tour, and Sid Vicious punched a hole in the green room wall. The venue saved the piece of wall and still displays it. These days the booking runs the full range, rock, country, indie, hip hop, and metal, all on the same legendary stage.
Cain's sits on North Main in the Tulsa Arts District, a short walk from the Tulsa Theater and The Vanguard, surrounded by bars and restaurants that make it easy to build a night around a show. If you only catch one concert in Tulsa, catch it here. Stand on the floor, feel it move, and you are part of something that has been going for almost a hundred years.
Cain's Ballroom seating and floor plan
A seating, layout, and best seats guide for Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Good to know before you go
- Does Cain's Ballroom have seating or is it standing room?
- Most Cain's shows are general admission and standing room, centered on the historic sprung dance floor, so there are no assigned seats. A limited seating or balcony area may open for some shows, but plan to be on your feet. Arrive early if you want a spot near the stage or along the rail.
- Is Cain's Ballroom all ages?
- Usually yes. Most shows are all ages, though some carry an age restriction that is listed on the event. Children 5 and older need a ticket for most shows, and kids 4 and under get in free. Bring a valid photo ID for the bar.
- Where do you park at Cain's Ballroom?
- There is a parking lot about a tenth of a mile south of the venue at the northwest corner of Cameron and Main. The Tulsa Arts District also has street parking that is free after 5pm and on weekends, so evening shows are easy. A rideshare can drop you right out front.
- What is the bag policy at Cain's Ballroom?
- No backpacks. Outside food and drinks, chairs, and a long list of other items are not allowed either, so travel light and bring as little as you can. A small bag will move through the door faster.
- How big is Cain's Ballroom?
- It holds about 1,800 people, which is part of the magic. It is big enough for national touring acts but small enough that there is no real distance between you and the stage.
- Why is Cain's Ballroom famous?
- It is the home of Bob Wills and a birthplace of western swing, it has a historic sprung maple dance floor, and it has hosted everyone from Hank Williams to the Sex Pistols, whose 1978 show is local legend. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003.
- What is around Cain's Ballroom?
- It sits on North Main in the Tulsa Arts District, steps from the Tulsa Theater and The Vanguard and surrounded by bars and restaurants. It is one of the easiest spots in town to make a full night out of a show.
- How do I get tickets and get in?
- Most shows use digital tickets you scan at the door. Bring your confirmation and a photo ID, travel light because of the bag policy, and get there early for a good spot on the floor.
