Underoath are one of the most important metalcore bands of the 2000s. Formed in Tampa, Florida, they broke through with They're Only Chasing Safety and then the landmark Define the Great Line, which debuted near the top of the chart and pushed the genre somewhere heavier and more ambitious.
Driven by Spencer Chamberlain's screams and drummer Aaron Gillespie's clean vocals, their sound mixes brutal heaviness with real emotion. After a breakup and reunion, they are still going strong, with a new album out in 2025.
Live, Underoath is intense and cathartic, a full body experience up close. Headlining The Vanguard, a small, loud club, is exactly the kind of room their music hits hardest in.
