La Mafia is one of the most important groups in the history of Tejano music. Formed in Houston in 1980 around vocalist Oscar De La Rosa and producer Armando Lichtenberger Jr, they took the regional Tex Mex sound, dressed it up with arena rock production and showmanship, and turned it into a phenomenon across the United States and Mexico.
Along the way they won five Grammys, sold millions of records, and packed arenas for decades, with a catalog of romantic hits that fans have passed down through families. Few groups have carried a whole genre the way La Mafia has.
